Since you guys are all about the 'manly stuff' , I have a question

I have a pontiac sunbird '94 4 cylinder. I have a bit of a hard-shift when going into 3rd gear but I have always had this problem and it's a general problem with the sunbird's that have automatics..

But I am going to be going to a college in tampa (parents paying, along with scholarships etc) and I was wondering

Should i get a new car (semi-new, it wont be anything over 14k)
or Fix this car up, maybe put some new rims or body kits(i love street cars :P )

But if I keep this car, eventually I will need to of course change the transmission etc. So I was also wondering how much would it be to take the auto out and put in a manual and what does it entail? What should I look for?

Thanks guys for all your help!

Bloodshot

P.S. long time no talk from me eh? Been busy with the hurricanes down here!

At a reptable transmition shop itll cost you $1500 to 2000$ to have a new transmision & a excellent warranty. Dont even think of trying to switch to a manual from an auto. If your looking for a car to trick out I would definetly buy another car, otherwise fix the sunbird up and drive the piss out of it untill its worn out than get a nicer car.

Buy a new car, (or even better get your parents to buy it) cause if the one you've got now is starting to give you problems then its probably the start of a long slippery slope down with car repairs !!

It isn't a FIREBIRD ITS A SUNBIRD =p

Thanks anyways

Baby it until it starts giving you problems ... then trade the hell out of it ... dont spend any money on "fixing it up" save it and use it for a down payment (you can get a 10 year old BMW for 2500$ ). No need to upgrade until you need to.

Peace

Yeah the Bimmers are nice, but the parts are killer and the maintainence is also. Trust me I was BMW certified Technician for some time and they need alot of attention, its like a super model who has dollar signs in her eyes.
Very pretty to look at, fun to drive for excitement but require so much attention, very needy and like to go and spend all your money on weekly visits.

The Pontiac should be fine, I would drive it or try some different ATF. May not even be mechanical at all, probably a issue with theTCM(Trans Module) or throttle body or a speed sensor, could be anything and probably a common issue that has a fix, but will give no mechanical issues or problems if not addressed. I would drive it until the wheels fall off. :D

Explain to me what that entire statement means. You lost me.

I've been told that GM's are generally good motors and alot of people find nothing really wrong with the tranny or anything. Plus it only has 84k mi on it, so I doubt the tranny would blow that quickly..Also do any of you take in the car as soon as it hits 3 months to change oil or do you wait until you hit the mileage or in between?

All it does is that when it goes to third gear(usually at 30 mph or 40) it kicks a little hard into 3rd. When I go into reverse it takes a sec or two, but even on new cars it kicks into reverse slower than a normal gear. So I am not worried about it or anything.

I have this big fear that all cars will just like break down without notice while im driving and I'll flip and crash etc.. when I know that usually doesn't happen, I just get nervous.

I might be just over-reacting, but i am painting the car and fixing it cosmetically(it has scratches and dents, i just took it too a guy and he took out all dents and he is gonna paint it and put a body kit on it...)

Like I said I might be just over-reacting..
