im with spidey mate. the thick, large font makes it hard to read, and is not very professional. id attempt a more simplistic, minimal look.

remember that while you dont want to fall into that 'corporate' style, you really want to project a defined sense of space and equality about the site.
  • if you want grey as a background, go fairly light, or fairly dark. in the middle like this it feels slightly obsolete. remember, your background is going to lift your site up to your visitors.
  • from the start, your visitors should be able to understand everything they need at just a glance. a more minimal header image, with aligned headings can help this
  • id make your links uniform in size, and with smaller text in a cleaner, easier to read font.
  • two of the most important design principles for web design are balance and proximity. If your site layout is cluttered, or too cramped, once you add content to the site it will only become worse. Your content will make your site, the layout is merely something nice for it to sit in. allow for some space and some balance between your layout stages, for example, if you have a lot of images together, say you nav bar, then allow for some space and work out your content area in relation to your keylines and boundries etc etc

they are just my tips :)

i recommend checking out the 'Mugshots' area of http://www.designiskinky.com if you get stuck with ideas :)
