Hardware router (NAT)

Software Firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro)

Antivirus Software (Norton)

Antispyware Software (Spybot-S&D/SpyBlaster and Ad-ware Pro)

Keep up to date with MS-updates using AutoPatcherXP

The most comprehensive and presumably unbiased antivirus software testing that I am aware of can be found here:

As for my own defenses:

Hardware Firewall (NAT)
Software Firewall (F-Secure)
Antivirus (F-Secure)
AntiPest (Spy Sweeper & SpywareBlaster)
Regularly download and install MS updates

Thankfully, no problems since. Happy with all those products.

My brother got a virus awhile ago. He had difficulty finding an online scanner that would automatically detect and remove the virus. One worked well:

The most annoying thing that happened to me was a hijacked IE6 homepage. I found help here:
