Is there a way to lock a partition with a password? So when i try to open ehm ... "D:" it asks for a password? But need to work even after a reinstall of my OS.
There are third party tools that can do this for you. won't work after re-install though, unless you are ghosting and restoring from the image.
eg. FolderGuard.
Damn, thanks anyway

You can tell it to STORE the files in the archive rather than trying to compress them. That way it takes very little time. |
That's working! Thank you!*bow*

Yup, WinRAR has the store option. It's in the list of the compression ratio dropdown.
HDD locking, this can be done on a HD just like the xbox HD's, disk has to support locking though and from what i have played around with locking I don't think you can do it specific to a partition, it will apply to the whole drive.
As everyone has said though archiveing is your best bet, unless you have a backup media which can be encrypted/passworded.
Just in case you use a real OS

you might also want to take a look at "Drive Crypt Plus Pack" - its what I used to crypt my HD's to be safe (tho it took forever to crypt all my HD's, 0.5Tb )
the maker of the program is secure star..only draw-backs are minor slowdown (never noticed any myself) and loss of hibernate-mode (well, I'm on desktop so I dont need it anyway).
following is a quote from their FAQ:
QUOTE |
Q: Has the DriveCrypt Plus Pack encryption ever been broken/hacked? A: No! In the past, we have also launched several contests offering up to 100,000 US$ for the first person able to open a DriveCrypt encrypted disk… Nobody succeeded! (See our press section for more details) Q: Is there a back door in your software? A: No. There is no "back door" in our software, and there is no point in making one as we might risk losing the good reputation of our products. Besides this, today there is no law in Germany that can force us to make one in our software. Q: We are from the "Police" "Tax authority" "Security Company"…. and are investigating on someone whose computer is protected with your DriveCrypt software. Since we were not able to break into the protected computer ourselves, could you please assist us getting access to the encrypted data? If requested, we can provide you with a court order. A: Sorry, but our software has been designed to be the most secure in the industry, and as such not even our programmers are able to break into a DriveCrypt encrypted computer. The only way to get access to the protected data is by entering the correct password known only by the legitimate user. Q: Can I encrypt my entire operating System with DCPP ? A: Yes, you can encrypt your entire operating system without loosing any data on it. |
You can have a look at foldershield if you like.
