I recently upgraded to WinXP Pro. It worked fine until i got online with it, when i started getting out of memory errors. I increased my paging file size to max, then set it at system managed after finding the former didnt work.

After trying to DL an antivirus demo to no avail (didnt have time/had to return my modem as i share it with my mother) I found my performance in the game NHL 2004 to have gotten incredibly choppy.

I suspected I had got a virus from KaZaA, so i deleted KaZaA.

I also installed from my Motherboard disk Trend PC-cillan 2000. I needed to update it, but first i scanned (and found no viruses) and reset.

Now that its reloaded, my computer hardly moves. Its so slow i cant navigate menues.

Any tips?

MASTER: 76 GB Maxtor 7200 RPM Running Windows XP Pro VIA GRUB
SLAVE: 8 GB Fujitsu 5500 RPM Running RedHat Linux VIA GRUB
CPU: AMD Athalon 1700+ (1466 MHZ)
MONITOR: 19" Viewsonic
VIDEOCARD: Nvidia GeForce 2 64MB
RAM: 256 MB SDRAM (IMO probably a contributing factor to my troubles)
CD: 52x (no burner or anything)

Im thinking Il be taking out my master hard drive, putting it on my bros PC as a slave and burning stuff as backup, then wiping the drive. Any way around this (as I cannot function without my Windows XP segment as Linux does not support my modem)

is this a fresh install of the OS and this happens? or like u you say a direct upgrade?

Personally i find actually upgrading can degrade performance, while a clean install shows more.

256mb ram is like the dead minimum that MS asks, even though i see some ibms and such use 128.

free anti-virus AVG 6! totally free and all updates gets equal or better reviews then the norton and mcafee.

your 7200 drive, is on a speed compatible ide cable? your drive is what ATA/uDMA 133 or such? some IDE cables max out at 100, not much of a boost in perf but meh. 133 cables all the wiring on the ide is shown as small ribs closely together, and the 66/100 ones are more spaced out and slightly bigger ribbs.

Did you check your task list? Open up task manager (ctrl-alt-del, task manager) and see if there's a program that's taking up 100% of the processor or a ton of memory.

upgrade on WinME? i would recommand doing a fresh reinstall with a full windows ex. that should get rid of all your problems and give you an increase in performence like Boss was talking about

maybe even partion the 80gig HD it to too parts, windows and the rest.. maybe 4-5 gigs for windows, that way if you need to formatyou wont lose as much data, you can even set where you want hte My Documents stored.

before i repartition it, is it possible to make it so i could give a gig to Windows 3.1 (i like tooling with it for nostalgia and some CADing programs that run faster on it) and the remainder for XP? I have only dealt with partitions very loosly (i know how to do them, and thats about it)

seems like you may either have to gowith a third boot option inyour setup. to have XP, 3.1, linux

Yeah that's possible Pikaporeon. You can easily do that with Partition Magic. It's easier than FDISK.

yep, don't even think on repartitioning without PartitionMagic. That app makes that task easy.

Ive toyed with some settings and ive actually totally redone my PC, optimizing my second drive more, as RedHat was useless due to lack of support for my componentry.

You are assuming there is no rule because it's not written down anywhere.

I personally think it's a bit too big and 'in your face' and would prefer it to be smaller. Most members have a sig with maximum sizes of about 300*75 or 350*85. they seem to be just right.

I have posted in the Staff forums asking the Admins to give guidance on sig limits.

I set up the partitions on my PC with Partition Magic, and then used BootMagic to select which partition I boot from. I have Win98SE, WinXP Pro #1, and WinXP Pro #2, plus a data partition.

I do a lot of home automation and embedded processor playing around, and I still have to use Win98SE to write directly to the serial ports reliably (uploading programs into a single board computer).
