Hey.
There's another forum that I am involved with, which is based on one of my real life hobbies. We use the forum to organise games/meets, as well as buy/sell items, and of course for discussion. The current forum is quite old, and is using a free, remotely hosted forum from Conforums ( http://www.conforums.com ), which completely lacks all features that may be useful. With my urging, we've decided to create a new version of the board, definitely php-based. I've volunteered to take an admin's seat and set it up. Now, my only concern is that I have no php experience. What I'd like from you guys, is advice on which software to use, and any help on finding a good place to assist me in learning the language. Software I'm considering: - Invision http://www.invisionboard.com - vBulletin http://www.vbulletin.com - phpbb http://www.phpbb.com (free) Any help will be greatly appreciated. - RZ -------------------- ![]() |

I dont like Vbulletin or PHPBB, but Invision looks like it will be harder to get stuff for in the future.... Invision doesnt need much PHP skill for the basics but if you wanna get skinning and such youl need some... i dont have ANY and i get by ok....

Is a good place to get aquinted with programming skills. I for myself bought a PHP book which was very good (for me at least) and simply started reading and doing the walkthroughs it has. (Core PHP Programming) The next step of my learning experience with PHP was to customize a picture gallery that I've d/l for free (lots of those all over) and incorporated it into a new website that I've created: http://oldcars.co.il . That gives you both skill and a mission to accomplish something. With both at hand, you will make every effort to make it happen so that you will build your application. Stick to the PHP4 version for now. The PHP5 version is not available at provider's servers as of yet, very few actually install and run the version 5 as it came out only few months ago. While the PHP4 version has been out for over 3 years, therefore much more available and liked. Good luck. -MS2 |

I love Invision. Never tried the others, but just love it. If you ever need some help with anything, lemme know.
I taught PHP to myself. It's actualy not that hard to understand. www.php.net is a great way to look stuff up. Or do a google search like: site:php.net search stuff to get a detailed description on how a specific function works in PHP. Taught myself C++, HTML, Java and VB in the same ways. If you have an eye for it, you'll get by! Luck!! -------------------- ![]() -----------------------Live The Day At Hand----------------------- |

Like DutchKid, I taught myself PHP. Best thing to do is download the manual from www.php.net, and search the site. There are a lot of handy code examples on that site.
