QUOTE According to one punter who contacted ZD Net, he was told by Windows support that those that do not run WGA in Autumn will have their computers switched off. Windows will give you a 30 day warning and then if it's not installed, Windows will stop working. QUOTE That can’t be true, can it? I’m always suspicious of any report that comes from a front-line tech support drone, so I sent a note to Microsoft asking for an official confirmation or, better yet, a denial. Instead, I got this terse response from a Microsoft spokesperson: QUOTE As we have mentioned previously, as the WGA Notifications program expands in the future, customers may be required to participate. [emphasis added] Microsoft is gathering feedback in select markets to learn how it can best meet its customers' needs and will keep customers informed of any changes to the program. QUOTE Currently, no one at Microsoft is blogging about this fiasco. No executive has been quoted on the record about it. There are very few technical details available, and those that have been published are being tumbled through the spin machine and spit out as press releases. sources: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=32706 http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=84 -------------------- This person is best talked to with the help of a computer..

Wouldn't be true in the way they describe it ... there are lots of Mum + Dad users out there with Windows on their computer that they barely know how to use it and aren't connected to the net to get the WGA update. So I would very much doubt a PC would shutdown if it doesn't have the update.
I would be more likely to beleive that if your computer with a pirated Windows became "infected" by the sneaky WGA update and you ignore the popup about getting a legit version, then it may shutdown on you. |
