ok i'm not sure if this is the right section to put this in but i have two computers one running win me the other running winxp pro my question is i have norton system works 2001 on the pc with win me can i use the same program version on win xp pro?according to the documentation on the cd it says that win xp is covered by it but i'm not sure.i had nortons anti-virus corporate edition on my win xp computer but it stopped working and all the downloaded updates would no longer install(kept coming up with error 16 bit file cannot run on this system)even though i've updated every night to get the latest definitions.winxp was in ntfs files when installed not 32 bit.unfortunately my nortons disk is damaged and i cannot replace it so i'm stuck with an earler version.to tide me over i tempoarily installed kaspersky and it caused me nothing but problems.where nortons had said there were no viruses this rotten thing kept finding stuff and i refused to ignore,disinfect or quarantine so my only option was to delete.everything seemed fine till about twelve hours later when the pc got really slow and took forever to load anything so irestarted the pc only to find that it was impossible to get anything to open without it sitting and thinking about it for half an hour at a time.i've come to the conclusion that the files kaspersky deleted were system files and my pc tech agrees.i will be reinstalling win xp but want to know if i can use nortons systemworks 2001 safely with xp?

I had problems with system works 2002 on win xp. infact, I couldn't even install it. said something like "this version of sw is not compatibale with your version of windows". try using this av program:

what will work for one person on one system will not work for another.

With windows 98 Norton 2002 was the first decent virus scanner with a windows interface that I only ever got very infrequent problems, 2003 went down hill a bit with interface issues, but worked well still.

NAV03 worked well with windows XP with less interface issues then with windows 98 systems. 2004 works well on XP, but never put it on a 98 machine, more problems then ever before!

I am currently selling VET for people with 98, and NAV04 for people with XP. But I'm looking into the Panda Software antivirus program cause I've noticed a number of viruses that attack AntiVirus software dont attack it, if it works well, I might sell it insead.

Give AVG a try it is free.

I have also had the Norton thing happen to me...to be honest, Windows Me is a waste of time, you should take the plunge and stick with XP...with of course all the patches and fixes that come out all the time !

I had a drive partitioned into Win 98 & Win XP Pro...installed Norton systemworks..all hell broke loose.

Later I found that Norton themselves DO NOT RECOMMEND installing their product on a split drive...Hive errors etc.

Stick to XP in NTFS format, your diskspace will stay a lot lower too.

True - most virus programs are shite...what one stops, another lets in - but I repeat AVG is almost better than having no antivirus software installed.

Why not try PC-Cillin?

I found also that Norton products hog too much of your precious cpu time and as a result, actually slow you machine down in lots of ways....I have found PC - Cillin to be just as accurate as Norton - with a tenth of the system drain Norton used to produce.

But there are so many of the av products out there..Is one actually better than the other?.......all are better than the free AVG...you do get better results with the bought version of AVG, but it is nowhere near as big a company as the other guys...I have heard that Sophos is good too.

But I do feel for anyone with Norton problems...they are famous for it...seems to work great on one motherboard...crap on another...it's all a maze.

On Systemworks...if you ever do a speed disk defrag with your split drive as I have said above (98 & XP) One drive will be defragged...the other will say the classic..

"Invalid system disk...please insert boot disk"

My twopence worth...forget a partitioned dual-boot system, just go for XP then install systemworks, it will be upgradeable to work with XP...Speed disk will now work correctly....System works isn't a bad program at all really, but NAV is too consuming and too slow and big etc.......install SystemWorks WITHOUT using Norton Anti Virus at all......find another av prog.....you get the best of both worlds.

Anyone else found this?

The definitions are pretty much updated daily (self update in background takes around 5secs on dialup) and it monitors email, P2P and instant messaging programs as well as files opened and/or written. It's caught everything that's come my way.

It has been my humble experience, speedieboy, in repairing WinMe systems that run as slow as yours, that it is due to multiple instances of spyware, malware, trojans and so on. If you can get it booted, CTRL/ALT/DEL to manually shut down everything except system processes, you may be able to repair it (tedious, to say the least) or better, save that data to backup, then format & reinstall.

I wish you well ... those multiple infections are tough.

I use Symantec AV. Not as fancy as Norton, but gets the job done, with much less resources.

I'm using Norton AV, it might take the resources down some, but it has never caused my PC to crash or worse. I don't even notice the slowdown so I'm sticking to it. My statement here, it might slow you down, but it also keeps you safe. What works for one person might not work for another, but that doesn't mean that it's crap.

Hmm that test cannot be very accurate, cause we had NAV04 Pro on a machine at where I worked, actualy I put AVG free edition on a couple of them and some idiot they hired in to work on the computers installed NAV04 Pro on all of them for a fee of course.

Well one of the employees kept crying to me about how he knew he had viruses on the machine but Norton would not find them. So I made sure it was updated as far as it would go, scanned, notta, restarted, scanned, notta, shut everything off in taskmanager(except crit) rescanned and found nothing. So I said screw it and scanned with AVG it found 2 trojans then I updated AVG and it found 3, removed them and all was well.

Of course never run 2 anti-virus sw together, especialy Norton and McAfee, talk about lock-down.

I have to confirm that NAV 8.1 Corp did not find a virus I had at work ... Been using Kaspersky with great results.

My personal favorite is McAfee. Never had any problems with it and it catches all those nasty trojans that try to launch through your browser.
