I'm in need of a few properly working proxy servers (would prefer in the UK but anywhere in Europe is fine - even Australia would work). 99.9% of the freebies I find are DOA - not doing anything illegal, I just need to hid my IP behind something for a while for a chat session.

It's difficult to find good proxies nowadays since proxies are few and the users a lot. So proxies die quickly. So if you want some good anons you'll have to put some time into it.
Download the proxy checker Charon from ,members.upc.nl/mt.khandwalla/Charon.rar You don't have to install the program. Just unrar it and copy it to program files. Go to a proxy forum. ,http://www.proxyfire.net/forum/index.php ,http://www.dcsproxy.com/and ,http://www.proxyworld.org/forums are good ones. You'll have to register there. This guy Underscore posts some good proxies in all the 3 forums. The advantage of Proxyfire.net is that it doesn't have a private section so what you see is what you get. Alternately you could just type free anonymous proxies in Google. You'll get lots of results.
Copy the latest proxies from the site you choose and paste them in Charon. Click in Charon: check proxies -> check anonimity of all proxies. When Charon is finished click Filter list -> delete non-anon. Then click filter list -> filter dodgy/duplicates/gateways. Delete all proxies that have an ip under Gateway. Gateway should be no. Delete also socks since not all applications support socks. Now choose one of the the fastest proxies (proxies based nearest to you are usually the fastest but since you want ones in Europe that makes it all the more difficult to find fast proxies). Copy/type it in Firefox under Tools->Opions->advanced->network->settings->manual proxy configurations. Check üse this proxy server for all protocols. Restart Firefox and go to ,http://www.ip-adress.com to see if you are anonymous. You might have to try a few proxies before you find one that works smoothly. Sometimes you won't get any internet connection. Just change the proxy and retry. Remember they die quickly so if you can't surf any more it's time to change your proxy again.
