I have a 4port linksys Router comming off a Cable modem. In the linksys uplink port is my SMC 4port wireless router. My comp behind the SMC on a WIRED connection.

Need to verify procedure to integrate the SMC into the Linksys network, seemlessly. Such that I can can access the linksys networks shared printer. Currently this does not happen.

Linksys Router : BEFSR41 (need to verify it, but it is close to this one)

SMC router : SMC7004AWBR or SMC7004VWBR

either way the SMC has 4 ports, Plus WAN maybe they just have some mixed up info there. has all features of the A model but has the 4 ports Plus WAN.



the default internal IPS are

192.168.1.x for the Linksys

192.168.2.x for the SMC

at the moment the linksys is pretending the SMC is a computer and giving it a IP. Im sure there is a function in the LINKSYS for the PROPER setup and implementation of the UPLINK port (or port 1 on some models)

Should i have the SMC use the same internal DHCP, while using STATIC Ips from the LINKSYS?

Or should i completely change one of the INTERAL IPs to something like 172.16.5.xxx ?

Currently, I cannot access any computer on the Linksys part of the network, including printers. however i can access the internet.

THis needs to be reverse or backwards compatible to. i need the Linksys network to "SEE" not just the router, but through it to the rest of the network, or sub-network.

I would recommend using the Linksys as your DHCP server and turn it off on the SMC. That way, all of your servers will be on the same subnet .. currently you are on 2 networks which should be OK if you change your subnet mask to 255.255.0.0. Most likely, you are using a 255.255.255.0 mask which would prevent you from transversing the 192.168.1 and 192.168.2 networks.

Anyway, only the linksys should be the DHCP/NAT server and the SMC should act as a dumb router.

only prob is the router is wireless, and i need the DHCP for the wireless connection to my laptop.

I guess that you'll have to change your subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 then....

Why do you want an IP assigned by the SMC?? Even though you are wireless, you can still get an IP from the Linksys DHCP router ..

im a little confused right now.

this is a small idea of setup.

cable -> LINKSYS -> comp1
LiNKSYS->SMC-> comp2(wired)
SMC-> Laptop (wireless)
SMC-> comp3 (wireless, not connected at present)

Boss .. Doesn't matter if your comp is wireless or wired .. only your linksys should be the dhcp server ...

All wired comps plug into the Linksys .. including the SMC

Turn off DHCP on the SMC (This makes the SMC into a Dumb router and basically just a pass-thru device)

The wireless comps come in through the SMC and passes through to the Linksys .. The Linksys hands out an IP through the SMC into your wireless comp ..

I think you are thinking this is a lot more complicated then it really is .. It's not ;-)

so you are saying that if i have disabled the DHCP in SMC the coreesponding DCHP in the linksys will have an IP that reaches the the computers in the SMC router

so then would the Linksys give an IP to the router, or just the computes attached to it?

Yep .. The router just takes up one port of the Linksys (No IP assigned). Each computer on the network (either wired or wireless) will request an IP via the DHCP server (The Linksys)

If you have the SMC already hooked into the Linksys and your wireless comps can get to the Internet, then you would just need to disable the DHCP server on the SMC .. If this is not the case, then respond back as there may be one item that you may have to do to get this configuration to work .. (you may need to use an 'uplink' port on the linksys or a crossover cat5 cable to hook the SMC into the Linksys .. No biggie, but each manufacture's router handles this differently (The key here is WHAT the Linksys requires to hook another router into it .. I don't have a Linksys router, so I can't really answer this)

My configuration is similar ...

Linksys Wireless -> Netgear 8-port router -> Sonicwall Soho -> Cable modem

In my case, it's the Sonicwall that acts as the DHCP server ...

so the probs in conifguring the Linksys. the SMC gets an IP.

I have the linksys set up with routing tables to send data to the SMC.

I will look into it. and post back.

i tried it forbs no luck,

i even tried switching around the routers.

i think the problem, is the fact i have to routers.

I cannot make one router "pass on the IPs". the router wants an IP.

Maybe if i had a switch by itself....

I'm at a loss .. wish I had the HW so I can tell you exactly what to do .. Respond with your model numbers and I'll see if I can get to the User's Guide on their Web sites.

Have the Linksys be the master .. Turn off all configuration choices on the SMC (NAT, DHCP ..)

Cable modem goes into the Linksys .. Plug the SMC into one of the ports on the Linksys .. Does the Link light come on? There's really not much else to it .. Are you requesting Dynamic IP's for all your computers? You should be ...

all comps have set up for DHCP.

smc gets nothing pluged into the Uplink area. if put in a port, SMC gets an IP but not devices.

You can change the internal network addressing of the Linksys to match the SMC, that way they will both be on the same network. Linksys routers can't be assigned a class B subnet mask (255.255.0.0), at least the BEFSR41 I have can't.

You can also assign each computer a static IP address on the same subnet and forget about using DHCP.

I'm puzzled why you're linking 2 routers together anyway when the SMC has 4 wired ports. Why not just get rid of the Linksys and use the SMC? Do you need more than 4 wired connections?
