Twice the power of the 9800Pro 256 - not to shabby. I know the nVidia 6800 is out as well - but I've lost all faith in their products after the first batch of 'fx' cards that just crapped out on anything DX9.

Ooooo...competition keeps making it all better and better.

I'm eager to read some hands-on reviews of the X800 cards... the reviews on the new Nvidia cards have been stellar, even from places that have grown to loathe Nvidia over the last year, like HardOCP.

It'll be great to have two new cards that are both a lightyear leap in performance to choose from and be excited over... finally give me a real reason to upgrade from my aging GeForce3. smile.gif

Well according to the Inquirer, the X800 cards will be delayed by about 2 weeks. So you'll have to wait a bit longer for those head-to-head reviews.

Here's the first of the head-to-head reviews, from HardOCP:

ATI X800 vs. Nvidia GF6800

I look at it this way: ATI's looking here and now. nVidia is hoping against hope for games to utilize DX9c and SM 3.0 (looking towards the future). I don't see that happening this year. Games that will be released this year are being developed now - no one's going to re-code jsut because one card can utilize one aspect of a new technology.

I'm also seeing this: the 6800Ultra requires two molex connectors and a 430Watt PS. The X800XT actually runs cooler than the 9800XT and uses less power. If I don't need a bigger (and louder) PS, I don't want one.

Should be very interesting in the coming months. My 9600XTG is still going good smile.gif

I think if i need one of these cards ill need a new CPU and more ram tho.

Either way its great to see some competition

Good commentary audiyoda... I agree it'll be interesting to revisit this comparison in 4-6 months when a couple of other shoes have dropped, like PCI-X among other things. The X800 is clocked as fast as it can reasonably go given the theoretical limitations of its fabrication process and the memory modules it's using, while the Nvidia solution has more headroom to grow - in fact, they've just sort of announced an Nvidia 6800 Ultra (extreme) variant to come out as well in the short term.

There are some questions how the NV part will fare on a PCI-X interface given their HSI bridge implementation, but it looks even more promising down the road. Whether ATI's offering has more legs for the long haul remains to be seen, but it's a winner out of the box for today's games.

Wonder what the price differnce will be between the X800 Pro and the XT - considering the Pro version holds it own against the XT at all but the highest tested resolutions. I honestly couldn't see myself gaming at 1600x1200 so if the $$ difference is large (which I'm guessing it will be on past history) then I'd go for the Pro in favour of the XT and give it a light overclock.

X800XT SRP: $599.99
X800Pro SRP: $499.99
X800SE SRP: $215.99 (basically a 9600Pro)

Of course these are suggested retail prices, actual is YtBD.

The Pro and the XT are the same SRP? huh.gif How does that work?
Audiyoda
Opps...my bad. Edited original.

Audiyoda

These cards sure do look nice! But being the broke college student I am, I must wait a few months before picking something up! biggrin.gif

Hell ... my 9600 AIW with dual monitor support runs all the games i play fine. And with two screens I can use Premiere Pro and AE more efficiantly .. I just dont have a need for more GPU cycles right now ....

Peace
